Early Learning

Children who are behind when they start school often stay behind.

Fewer than half of children in Washington State enter kindergarten ready to learn. The first five years of your child’s life are among the most critical for learning. In these early years, children  need to be nurtured and supported to develop the social, emotional and cognitive skills required to become successful adults.

Visit the Thrive by Five website for more on early learning, helpful resources and information on our state’s early learning initiatives.

Math and Science

Math and science = more opportunities for your child.

Did you know that a majority of workers who earn more than $40,000 annually have two or more high school credits at the algebra 2 level or higher? The more your child knows about math and science, the more options he or she will have in life.

Learn Now or Pay Later: In Washington State, roughly 50% of high school graduates who immediately enter community or technical college require remedial math classes. And nearly two-thirds of students who take remedial math courses do not earn degrees. The bottom line: math and science matter.

High-Demand Degrees

In Washington State, the jobs in highest demand are in the fields of engineering, science and technology.

Washington leads the nation in jobs for people with bachelor degrees in science and engineering, but is 38th in the number of students graduating with these high-demand degrees. Employers must hire out of state to fill these positions because our students aren’t prepared.

Visit Prosperity Partnership to learn more about these growing industries and potential future job opportunities for your child.
