What Parents Can Do
Parents are the first and best teachers of their children.
- Talk to your children. Read to them early and often.
- Ask them about their school day and about their classes.
- Talk to their teachers and ask for regular progress reports, especially in the areas of English, math and science.
- Attend teacher-student conferences, and come prepared with questions.
- Help them with their homework, and make sure they do it. Assist them in seeking out help if it is needed.
- Finally, talk with principals, school board members and your legislators about the importance of toughening up Washington’s math and science standards for graduation. This investment of time will pay off when your child leaves for their first job or for their first taste of college.
